“Clothes for Special Occasions” – A Cultural Understanding Event

Clothes can be used to express a country or region’s culture and individuality, especially clothes for festivals, ceremonies, and special occasions. In this session we will look into the topic of “Clothes for Special Occasions”, and use it to deepen our cultural understanding.

In this session’s workshop, we will have MATSUMOTO Mari, a graduate from Shizuoka Arts and Culture University (SUAC) deliver a lecture, and we will then break off into small groups and share our stories about the clothes used for special occasions using photos.

We will ask questions like: When and where was this photo taken? What memories do you have associated with this photo? Can you explain the clothes you were wearing? and so on!

Learn about the differences and similarities between different countries, regions, and generations.

Following the workshop we will hear from the Indonesian Friendship Association where they will show us and talk in detail about the traditional Indonesian dyed cloth, “Batik”.

At the end of the event, participants will have the chance to try on traditional clothes from Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. You can take the clothes in your hands and feel the materials and patterns up close and personal.

If anyone has clothes from their home country which are worn for special occasions and you wish to show them and have others try them on, feel free to bring them with you! （※ Please note that the organizers are not responsible for the possible loss, damage, or staining/soiling of items.
